Farmers Market - Uvita Style

Uvita is growing... no wait, check that.  Uvita is exploding. Climate, simplicity, beaches, wildlife, tour activities, the list goes on.  Uvita is a very attractive place and it has been found.

Farmer's Market

Uvita enjoyed its first Farmers Market, or Feria as it's called here, last Saturday, May 10th, 2008.  Perhaps the most enjoyable aspect of the event was the much commented "sense of community", but the available fruits and vegetables weren't bad either.

Brian Nice is the developer of Rincon de Uvita where the event was held.  This is Brian's second go round with such a project after having done the Pueblo de Rio project in Dominical some years back.

The difference with this project is that the focus is on the Tico culture and preserving it.  The cornerstone of the project is an indoor soccer field which hosts regular play now for the community.  There are shops and a soon to be gym, as well as a typical Tico food Soda.  It's all just getting started so I'll add details as I get them.  Back to the Farmers Market.

Margarita Beattie is the feet-on-the-ground organizer of the produce aspect of the Feria.  She and the principal of their company, Trish, did a great job of organizing and getting farmer's within a nearby radius to come to the Feria and have their produce, most if not all of which was organic, on display at the market.

The ideology is to work solely with producers and not distributors. One of the main objectives of the Feria, aside from giving the farmers a local outlet for their produce, is to demonstrate how the "100 Mile Diet" can work.  There is the idea that if we eat what grows in the region where we live, that this can be a healthy lifestyle.  There are also global warming considerations of low distribution costs.

A great sense of a growing community, as well as sound, sustainable ideals will hopefully work to make the weekly Feria (Farmers Market) a success and a feature of life in this extraordinary coastal Costa Rican town.

The second Feria will be this Saturday, this week, same place.
